Tag Ads - And I’m Not Talking About Body Spray Commercials
By admin | December 4, 2007
Depending on the nature of your site, you may be able to tag entries or products in such a way that users can click on a tag to reach a page that displays everything on your site related to that tag. If you can, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so.
An increasing number of web users have gotten used to “web 2.0″ things like tagging and rating systems. To some, it makes more sense to navigate a site by tags like “gifts for him” and “gifts for the gardener” than by more general categories like “electronics” and “men’s apparel”. Depending on the format you use to display tag results, it may also provide an easier way to browse the products that a person wants to see.
I’ve recently been running some experiments to see how those pages do as landing pages. The answer - surprisingly well. Since a tagging system lets you create the perfect page for someone in a certain mindset, you are able to do a much better job of marketing to that individual than if you had simply dropped him or her at the homepage or a single product page.
Depending on your setup, the system itself may be a little time-consuming to set up, and there’s always the issue of whether or not you should open it up to your visitors for tag contributions, but so far, it appears to be a great way to personalize the experience for a small group of people while earning a great return on investment. The concept might also work well for affiliate offers on blogs - whether by tag or by category - assuming that the landing page provided an appealing display of the related entries. That could take some experimentation.
My questions: Has anyone else experimented with doing PPC on tags? Have your results been similarly positive?
